Hydrostatic pressure is a basic cause of basement leaks. Increased water table provides hydrostatic pressure against the foundation, which results in leaks.
A basement also leaks because of cracks, spaces and rots in basement window wells. Heavy rains and melting snow produce pressure and load the window well. Leaks begin to appear as a window well becomes defenseless to much pressure, especially when it's improperly installed.
